Well, it's a song about Facebook, of course.
“Song for a Facebook Account” is pretty much exactly what it promises; one singer-songwriter’s grumpy and critical ode to the social media giant of our generation. It begins in a way that would make you think it was purely comedic—that awkward, stream-of-consciousness, culturally-aware style popularized by hipsters in the open mics of the 21st century—though as it progresses, the song begins to feel like a sincere and desperate pleading of rage and helplessness.
The guitar is simple, and lurches along to match his loose rhythms. He makes mistakes and fumbles, but seems fairly unapologetic about it, which altogether increases the sincerity and low-fi quality of this amusing and unique song. The poetry isn’t amazing, but the freshness of the subject matter makes up for this.
I’m probably the worst person
in my Facebook would suggest.
It says I have hundreds of friends
and dozens of requests
But lately I can’t shake
this sinking feeling in my chest
I’ve got way less.
And almost every time that I log in
I get depressed
to see my distant relatives
are spewing hateful texts.
Narcisisstic memes meant to
imply that you’re the best
Shit I detest.
and High School sports fans syndromes seem
to have spread to politics
I never voted in my life
I don’t blow up the internet
Preaching how I’m so right
the opposition’s crass,
silently I’ll let them burn the world
for the sake of the ash.
And I know I’m the worst person
in my Facebook would suggest
I’ve led my share of sinking feelings
pumping out of chests,
of ones who call me brother
ones who used to call me friend,
never again.
