Time to Motivate
Typhoon Ferri was formed in the spring of 1999 and officially hit the road a year later. The band performed at various college stadiums around New England and shared the stage with the Lemonheads, Rustic Overtones, and God Street Wine. The band describes themself as a "classic rock-influenced band with a little blues/funk flavor." The band's popularity spread when The Boston Globe reported that their song "Infamous" was the number one downloaded song on their www.Boston.com MP3 Music section in March of 2000. Typhoon Ferri released their debut album in April 2000 on the Wishbone Records label.
Their song "Overcome" has a nice, soulful electric-acoustic drive and solid beat, sporting nuanced singsong lyrics almost in the style of early Cake, though with a sound more similar to the legendary 90's indie pop band, the Barenaked Ladies. I've transcribed the first two verses below:
Well your daughter's home alone
And your shuttin' off the phone
So they won't bother you this time.
You're running up a tab
Never calling for a cab
Say one drink is no time.
Deep inside you wanna quit
but the corner where you sit
They breed intoxication
There's so many things you've planned
and the motive is in hand,
But you lost the motivation
Everyone knows you've got a heart
Now what's it for?
No time for left for small time any more
The call is reigning out from here to Kingdom Come
Time to overcome.
Well you're living with your man
And you're doing what you can
To cover up the bruises.
You almost told a friend
but you left her in the end
wondering what the news is.
You'd like to pack your things
find out what the future brings
but you're scared how he'll receive it
and the only tricks you write
when you're wearing something tight
it's a mess, you've got to leave it.
Everyone knows you've got a heart
Now what's it for?
No time for left for small time any more
The call is reigning out from here to Kingdom Come
Time to overcome.
