“Called to the Waves” opens with beautiful electric-acoustic guitar fingerings and the soft, energetic patter-patter of brushes on a snare drum. Next of course comes Danny Shipley’s soft, devotional vocals, with just the right amount of reverb put on it. Singer-songwriter Shipley (from Cleveland, OH), seems to write primarily religious music, using poetic metaphor and nuanced imagery appropriate for a modern, young audience. If I ever found myself watching an open mic in a church, Shipley would definitely be the stand-out of the evening. His breathy, steady voice feels both smart and optimistic, a combination rarely found in indie rock.

"Called To The Waves" would be an excellent theme song for

The final montage in a tender, humanistic NBC dram-edy

I would add "Called To The Waves" to a playlist called

Hope, and other pretty things.

The most impressive instrumental/vocal performance in this recording is

Danny's vocals.
