So Loose, Barely Even Rapping
Certain rappers and producers joined forces in the last ten years, in a mission to sound like less and less effort was actually being applied to hip hop, especially in the dirty south of Lil Wayne and others. What I mean is that I think certain hip-hop artists realized it sounded cool to be BEHIND the beat...as if they didn't really care enough to show up to the beat on time. In some ways, it's the sound of apathy.
This can be achieved on the production end by pushing the note's Attack way back (creating a "swelling" effect). It can be achieved by the MC by simply being that laid-back: by feeling utterly sedate, feeling utterly confident, being so minimal in your rapping that your rhymes sound as if they're just barely catching the end of the beat before it drives away.
"Turned Up Daily" feels to me like this. It's cool, it's unconcerned, it slinks up to the mic and opens its lips just enough to spit out its dirty raps.
