A review of "Hazel Green" by Mark Allan Jensen

A lovely, old-fashioned warmth hugs the folkloric voice and guitar of Mark Allen Jensen, who moves me in a way that few others can do. The poetic simplicity and depth achieved through Jensen's reverberant voice reminds me strongly of folk legend Gordon Lightfoot, especially when its sung with a little bit of a Northerner's accent. The song is written (realistically or fictionally) in the Alabama town of Hazel Green, with a singer dreaming of making enough money from his music to journey up to "cold Minnesota" and fetching the love of his life, so that he can bring her back to live with him. Jensen's voice is filled with longing, loneliness, and above all, tenderness. If I could "buy" this song, I would (though I'm generally unsure whether or not the narrator of the song is really Jensen or not, since he now resides in Hudson, WI).

"Hazel Green" is reminiscent of well-known artists such as

Gordon Lightfoot
