One Hot Kansas Emcee
"I took a couple lefts, but the game is where I left it/ walk around feelin' depressed and all rejected/ those types of feelings I leave for someone else to mess with/ I ain't fallen off yet, I just lost my direction." So begins the pretty underground rhymes of "Pay me a Visit," a track from new 27-year-old Kansas maestro Thain. His style is sharp and refreshing, reminding me of many of my first underground hiphop albums I had back in high school. The beat is clean and heavy without being overbearing, carried by a jazzy and tender female vocal sample from some unknown album of yore. After two minutes, a second rapper jumps on the mic, with a more animated and gruff style than Thain. The two complement each other well. Thain has two albums out, 2015's 'Idle Mind' and 2017's 'King Idle.' I would strongly recommend a listen for anyone who wants to see what's coming out of the midwest right now.
