Meditations on Bachman Turner Overdrive
Anybody paying attention to my reviews might notice that I give points to weirdos and genre-benders, and Scott Horwath's "Taking Care" certainly gets a few points. It's a classically-arranged cover of Bachman Turner Overdrive's "Taking Care of Business," with meditative piano and light violin softly accompanying a harmonic pair of vocalists. It takes a minute to realize what song these singers are singing-- as the melody and many of the lyrics have changed. For example, it starts with the following, which emulate the spirit and rhythm of the original song, though they do not actually appear in the original song at all:
Now if you have the ammunition
You can be a politician
Go rehearse a filibuster in a restroom
Get a savvy running mate
If they put too much on your plate
So you can keep your head above the water
And then, he proceeds roughly to follow BTO's lyrics, though changing a few things hear, tweaking something there, to give the song a new feeling landing somewhere between the sarcastic and the unnerving. I'm not sure why this song exists, but I like it.
