The Blue Plate Specials deliver a hot little traditional Blues Rock number in "Something on the Side," which starts out at top speed and never slows down. The instruments are electric guitar, a killer piano, a swinging trapset, bass, and saxophone, not to mention the BPS' delightfully cool lead vocalist, equal parts smooth and gritty. "Something on the Side" seems to be about food, and specifically, side dishes--though it seems like the song's metaphors could be applied to more. Perhaps they are simply singing of the joys of life's excesses...that is, we all sustain ourselves on our entrees, but the real thrill in life comes from the extra, tantalizing snacks we order "on the side."

"Something on the Side" would be an excellent theme song for

Saturday night at the diner
