The classic Triggaman 808 bounce beat opens up the weird, hypnotic, possibly sarcastic song "Pick up the Tempo," which resists criticism as much as it resists accessibility. It's hard to tell if Michael Blaney is after irony or not here...but considering the producer hails from Oakland, CA, my guess is that on some level, he's gently mocking underground club culture with his dissonant, drawling vocal samples and strange juxtapositions. The song is fun, and keeps you on your toes, employing different sounds under his steady bounce beat, and suggesting it would be a great track to put on in the background of a weird East Bay house party.
