Beautiful Strings, Quiet Vocals
Carrying an entire song with a single instrumental guitar is no easy task, yet Matthew Ruth does just this with a nicely dynamic steel string guitar, moving back and forth between picking and strumming. The guitar is recorded clearly and sweetly, and could easily hypnotize any coffee-shop audience at an open mic. Unfortunately, something weird must have happened with his vocal mixing, because you cannot really hear the vocal parts at all. If this was intentional, I strongly encourage Ruth to play around a bit more with his levels; it sounds like he has a rich and beautiful voice that deserves to be pulled out. His melody sounds good and he stays almost perfectly on pitch (one of my biggest pet peeves when not the case).
