A machine's lullaby.
“Robot,†to me, is flawless; a song that has succeeded perfectly in what it sets out to do. Christian Loftus’ clear, strong singing voice gently tiptoes around the story of a robot singing to a human, in a tender and sweet lullaby (almost a nursery rhyme) about the nature of humans and the profound differences in our natural bodies.
But, heck, I’m a sucker for movies like Pixar’s “WALL-E†and even the 90’s cartoon “The Iron Giant,†which seek to imbue incredibly humanistic personalities into the machines of tomorrow. In an era in which a radical xenophobe man will soon be stepping into the most powerful office in the world, we need to keep hearing songs about creating connection between very different bodies, and very different voices.
“I’m made of metal
Got no bones
Perfectly logical
When I’m on my own
Perfectly strong
Perfectly honest,
Cause I’m made of metal.
You’re made of muscle
Flesh and bone.
When I hold you
I don’t feel alone.
Perfectly strong,
so full of empathy.
Cause you’re made of muscle.
If I had a choice
I would be human too.
Because while my body slept
I could still dream of you.
I could still dream of you.
My mind is circuits
and memories.
I can process but I can’t feel a thing.
Stare at the stars,
look at the crescent moon.
But my mind’s just circuits. “
