Rod Levi cites several rappers that he's been compared to including Notorious B.I.G. which you can hear at the forefront of his track “1996”. With a beat that sounds like it could have been produced by Dr. Dre or at least be featured on numerous tracks by rappers like NWA, Tupac and Mac Dre, “1996” has that pure 1990s West Coast style going on. Levi's track is pretty short as if it was meant to work more as an intro for an unknown EP especially with the opening news audio recounting a deadly rampage. In the short amount of time Rod Levi delivers as expected even throwing in some references here and there including that of DMX along with the signature dog bark. While “1996” is pretty solid if there is one thing that is holding the song back from reaching its full potential it would be the vocal quality as the beat seems more studio produced compared to the vocals. Regardless rap fans especially those who love Tupac and B.I.G. will probably find themselves at home with Rod Levi.
