With a band called Zap Goes Pop! you'd probably be expecting something like Wham, Boy George or even Robbie Williams. Instead you get a group from Philadelphia that sounds more like Rasputina than anything else. Like Rasputina, “Ubuntu” has an eclectic sound that will only be appreciated by people who are open to all types of genre. The sound is intoxicating and sweeps up and around you like some type of magic for an interesting ride. While there are undoubtedly some Rasputina vibes there is something very Tori Amos about the lyrics. There isn't an exact genre that Zap Goes Pop! can be put under but world and folk are a good start. Anyone who appreciates exotic sounds along with the mix of sitars, ukuleles and other instruments seldom used in mainstream radio hits should have a listen to “Ubuntu” and no it isn't about the OS of the same name.
